Know The Difference

Sworn vs. certified translation for Spain

In Spain a translation only carries legal weight when it is produced by a Traductor-Intérprete Jurado appointed by the MAEC. A U.S. "certified" translation — even notarized — has no legal status there and is rejected at file review for homologación, visas, nationality, and registry filings.

Why You Need It

Why Spain requires a sworn translation

Homologación of U.S. degrees

The Ministerio de Universidades requires sworn-translated diplomas, transcripts, and syllabi to recognize an American degree.

Visas & consulate appointments

Non-lucrative, student, work, digital nomad, and Golden Visa files need sworn-translated FBI checks, vital records, and financials.

Spanish nationality

Nacionalidad por residencia, matrimonio, or origen sefardí filed at the Registro Civil or through the Ministry of Justice.

Property, NIE & notario files

Spanish notaries require sworn translations for any foreign-language document in a real-estate, NIE, or estate file.

Marriage & civil registry

Single status affidavits, birth certificates, and prior divorce decrees for marrying or registering a marriage in Spain.

Spanish courts

Evidence, contracts, and U.S. judgments filed before Spanish tribunals must be in traducción jurada format.
