The purpose

What it is—and why the school matters.

Homologación is Spain’s formal process for recognizing a foreign qualification as equivalent to a specific Spanish credential. The Spanish authority evaluates the academic substance; the U.S. document chain proves that the records genuinely came from the issuing institution.

Who commonly needs it

  • Graduates entering a regulated profession in Spain
  • Students asked to establish Spanish degree equivalency
  • Applicants whose Spanish authority requests legalized U.S. academic records

The critical link

The registrar’s signature connects the records to the institution that issued them. Without that institutional link, the remaining steps may authenticate the wrong person’s statement.

Who may sign

A registrar is typical, but a principal, superintendent, head of school, records officer, or other authorized representative may sign when the institution designates them.

What the apostille does

The apostille authenticates the notary or public official in the chain. It does not independently verify the student’s grades or recreate school-issued records.

What follows

Once authenticated, the full record set moves to MAEC-appointed sworn Spanish translation, followed by final review and delivery.

Issue the academic records

Prepare the diploma, transcript, and any supporting records requested for the application.

Records should come from the issuing institution and include every relevant page, reverse side, grading scale, certification, or accompanying statement required for the intended filing.

The right foundation

School-issued certification

Official diploma and transcript
Statement made by an authorized school official
Signature completed before an eligible notary
Notarial wording accepted by the intended state
Complete record set prepared for apostille

Common rejection risk

A student cannot replace the school.

A notarized photocopy or a personal statement from the document holder generally proves only that the student appeared before a notary. It does not establish that the issuing school certified the academic record.

That distinction matters because Spain’s competent education authority wants a traceable chain back to the institution—not simply a notarized copy held by the applicant.

Before anyone signs, our team can review the proposed records and certification wording to help avoid a preventable rejection.

No notary on staff?

We make the signing easy for the registrar.

Choose the signing path that works for the institution. We coordinate the appointment, review the certificate, and move the completed set directly into apostille processing.

Mobile notary dispatch

When the school has no notary on staff, we coordinate a commissioned notary to meet the authorized official at the institution. Our team supplies the prepared signing instructions and receives the completed set for review.

  • Scheduled around the school official
  • Available through coordinated nationwide dispatch
  • Physical signature and notarial certificate
